Lighting up Kenshō

The High Seas Sparkle

WE ARE THRILLED TO SHOWCASE THE 66 BESPOKE LIGHTS THAT WE CREATED IN COLLABORATION WITH THE RENOWNED JOUIN MANKU FOR THE EXCEPTIONAL 75-METER MEGA YACHT KENSHŌ, BUILT BY THE ITALIAN SEA GROUP.

Pushing the boundaries of Yachting Design

The design team’s theory was to push boundaries when it came to luxury marine design. And the plan proved to be a good one with Kenshō being honoured with multiple yachting awards. This was Jouin Manku’s first maritime project. We sat down with them to learn their thoughts on lighting design for yachts.

The exterior is particularly eye-catching with its reflective turquoise hull.

While Kenshō’s owner originally drew her as a simple pencil sketch using just 12 lines, a large team of naval professionals eventually came together to perfectly craft Kenshō’s exciting exterior and interior.

Zen-inspired Lighting for indoors and out

Kenshō is a Japanese term from the Zen tradition and that feel is reflected throughout the interior. Jouin Manku embraced this meditative vision for Kenshō’s interiors, boldly highlighting the loft-like 2.7 metre high ceilings and panoramic views, and using rich materials.

Our brief was to create soft, free-floating lighting fixtures inspired by the shape of a lighthouse. Four large lamps, reminiscent of lanterns decorate the formal living area. These are capsule lights in which an old gold metal structure holds the blown glass capsule-shaped shade. Hidden inside is a smaller capsule infused with tiny bubbles to create mesmerizing optics. Similarly styled lighting was also created for the outside deck, designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and also offering portability for easy movement as needed.

An Elegant Lighting Collection to Brighten Every Room

Fourteen lamps were created for the bedsides in the six staterooms, also designed with a Zen feel in mind. The lamps are sleek and minimalistic and feature a base and shade that can be rotated up to 180°. In the owner’s bedroom, the bedside lamps mimic the lantern style with an old gold metal finish.

Four large lamps are fixed to the mirror in the owner’s bathroom. These special lights are made with slumped and fused glass, highlighted with frita which gives an interesting texture to the glass.

To maintain a continuous design concept, we created two more interesting types of lighting for Kenshō. In a vanity table, two small lamps are attached to the inside of the table.

Art of illumination

In the dining room, we created 26 pieces of lantern-type lighting for a cabinet’s shelves. The glass cabinets are full of lovely objects created by man and nature. The rotating selection of items, the glass and light create a fascinating focal point for the room.

It was a joy to work with a design team providing a new take on yacht design, inside and out.
