Arvia Cruise Ship

An Onboard Lighting Show
Arvia Sets Sail with a Dynamic Chandelier

Is there any other venue besides a cruise ship more designed for fun? We created a custom, dynamic statement chandelier for the atrium of P&O Cruises’ Arvia. We partnered with Jestico + Whiles, a London and Prague-based international architecture and interior design practice, to produce this memorable piece.

The ship’s Grand Atrium is at its centre, spanning three decks and featuring an ocean-view backdrop. P&O Cruises wanted the atrium to act like a pop-up entertainment space, designed for dancing and with a focus on lighting and sound. The Arvia features bronze, warm, and natural tones, so the atrium has a gorgeous wood floor, perfect for dancing the night away.

Jennifer de Vere-Hopkins, Associate Director at Jestico + Whiles said: “We proposed a modern chandelier made with hundreds of trumpet-shaped metal elements that follow the contours of the ceiling and create a twinkling effect. The idea for this atrium design with performance at it’s heart, was to create a complementary sense of celebration and movement, balancing each design element and considering the play of light on the different surfaces.”

The chandelier is dynamic, which means the ship’s staff can set changing scenes to match the mood and music of the party below. It is also maritime-ready, meaning all materials are protected from the salty and humid sea air, and all components are securely fixed. Because the chandelier hangs through a three-floor atrium, it had to be perfect from all angles.

“The chandelier looks amazing and, with so many different settings, changes the atmosphere of the atrium completely,” Lucy Norton, Brand Project Manager, New Build and Refit Projects for P&O Cruises, said.

For the dining area, we created a six nautical-inspired pendants featuring hand-blown glass and actual sea ropes for an authentic oceanic look and feel.
